International Film Studies
Have you sometimes stared at a history book and wondered if history is nothing more than a list of dates and irrelevant events having little to do with your own personal experiences? Are you planning a trip to a foreign country? Do you like to learn about other cultures?
Personalize your knowledge of history and other cultures through film. Instead of memorizing impersonal dates, you will be presented with film narratives that will give you a more immediate and personal feel for the cultures. Instead of looking at history from the outside, here you’ll be able to step inside a human and dramatic experience set in a particular culture.
I would recommend taking the modules if you fall into one of the following categories:
- Anyone planning a trip to a foreign country
- University/College International Studies students and faculty
- International History buffs
- Business Human Resource Departments (particularly those with active International/Diversity programs)
- Corporations and small businesses having economic ties with other countries
- International Institute Centers
Each course module is set in a particular country (at this time, the only module available is on the history and culture of modern China. Other modules will be available in the near future). None of the modules assumes any prior knowledge requirements. Nor do you have to be proficient in a foreign language (all foreign films will have English subtitles).
What To Expect In Each Module
Each module will contain a list of at least three films and comprehensive overview of the culture being represented in the films (As of this date, the only available film and culture module is on China. Other modules will be available based on film accessibility and demand).
All of the films are available for rental and/or purchase through Amazon.com, Netflix, Blockbuster, and/or Filmmovement.com. Specific links will be given for each film to assist you in making your rentals/purchases of the films.
